A new application called Yammer was introduced last week and I must admit it looks great.  It aims to solve the classic business problem of providing quick and frequent status reports and connecting people working on projects with hopes of preventing duplicate efforts.

For a business analyst view on Yammer, see Mike Gotta’s blog at the Burton Group here.

I love the way it looks and works; Simple and to the point.  It has a great UI and the features are all reveled on the main application window and don’t require an advanced degree to understand how or why you would use them.

Some questions to ponder:

  1. Is it different enough from Twitter to win a battle with Twitter?  Is Twitters lead and user base an insurmountable barrier?
  2. Will large companies react favorably to being forced to pay for admin functions for an application they did not ask for?  Is it even legal to host a conversation using names from a private domain you don’t own?
  3. If this is a useful technology, then why hasn’t one of the major unified communications companies or portal solutions been able to pull this off?
  4. Do people really want to spend part of their day updating their status?  Can’t this happen automatically, by actually working?

I had a few meetings in Boulder today and since Boulder is so dog friendly, I was able to take along mans best friend: Buster Dog.  I knew I would have some time between meetings, so I planned to take a short hike just before my last meeting.  Everything was on schedule.  Wrapped the pre-lunch meeting and had almost 60mins. to spend in the beautiful Flatirons before my lunch meeting.  Perfect; and the weather was made to order.

As usual, Buster leads off up the trail.  Then he starts freaking out!  He’s biting his back and running in circles?  But get this, he keeps on walking up the trail!  We walk a little further, then he freaks again and this time runs directly into a beehive and KICKS IT!  By this time, we are under serious attack and I finally understand what is going on.  Bees!!!
So we run out of the woods into the sun and we are both covered in Bees!  For some unknown reason I immediately start wiping the Bees from Buster [mostly because I don't know the reaction he will have and because I'm just that kind of dad ;)].  Once that was handled, I took off my shirt and found 3 Bees inside!  Not cool, but surprisingly not too bad either… I went to the store and bought some Benadryl and made it to my lunch appointment on time!

What a day!

It’s a totally fresh approach to Internet browsing and includes tons of data and usage history collected by Google over the years.  The plan is to integrate page rank, history and optimization based on the top public sites to make a killer browser.  That in conjunction with new thinking in security and usability will surely propel Chrome into a very popular and secure browsing experience.

The long term goal for Google is to blur the line between the web and the desktop; setting up the entry of Google Apps into the enterprise.  If it works (and I hope it does), it will pave the way for tons of new innovation in software that runs both in the cloud and on your local computer.

Follow the link below to see Google’s geek speek / announcement for the Chrome “Browser”.  (Does anyone else think the wording in the comic sounds like a Apple press release?)

Questions:

  1. Does this mean Google will effectively kill FireFox (by being better and dropping financial support?)
  2. How will Microsoft respond?
